2 things on this Othello mess, and I’m done:
1. Why the fuck wasn’t the NAMESAKE CHARACTER of the play not shown? The play is about a black man, right? Of all the goddamn scenes that could have been chosen, y’all pick the one closest to Birth of a Nation tribute DURING BLACK HISTORY MONTH? Miss me with that shit.
2. To all the folks talmbout how “if this is racist, then the whole play must have been racist!! Silly uppity negroes!!!”
This shit ain’t new. Anti-blackness didn’t just pop up during slavery times, folks. I’m gonna need y’all asses to pick up a damn history book, and not one from Tennessee.
Europeans had been calling black bodies MONSTROUS for A LONG ASS TIME. Look the shit up. You really think that wouldn’t have influenced Shakespeare’s works? If you do, I got a beach side house in Alaska to sell you…
Welp…
In what reality are we supposed to understand Othello is not inherently racist? It’s about a black dude who marries a white girl, is told lies about her sexual purity, and then kills her for it, finds out it was all a lie, and commits suicide. I am fairly sure we can describe that as racist without a lot of controversy.
