Fancasting Kristin Cashore’s novels.
Fire is explicitly not white in the books. So why is she white here? It is strongly implied that the Dellians on the whole are POC*, with the regular mentions of how weird and pale the Pikkians are in comparison, and Fire’s reaction to the cave-dwelling people as being even paler and weird looking. Not making Katsa and Po white does not excuse whitewashing for Fire and potentially Brigan.
*I’m willing to argue about the Dellians as a whole—I’d be cool with an argument that they are a multiracial society since Jessa had green eyes and red hair, but I’m also not clear why a fantasy novel should necessarily follow our standard conventions of how hair/eyes/skin match up. Either way, it does not change that Fire, herself, is explicitly dark-skinned.
