Though I have one complaint.
WHY is Fire brown-skinned in this?
I have nothing against brown-skinned characters (I LOVED Rue from Hunger Games, and Thresh). But this made no sense. Fire is strikingly red-haired, green-eyed woman; on the international covers of the novel, she is a white girl, and I thought it was clear in the book, unless I’m remembering something wrong, that she was light-skinned. Monster or not, I can’t say I’ve ever seen a red-haired black person (or indian, or any other dark skinned culture, for that matter), so it doesn’t fit good with the image most of us already have of her.
It’s like Cashore just sat down and went, “How can I make this appeal to more minories? I’ve got gays, woman’s rights folks, oh, I know, let’s bring in some blacks and/or indians. Everyone from the Dells is now dark-skinned. Okay, that’ll work! Coffee break!”
You CAN’T do that! I mean, as a writer myself, I hate when people say that to me, telling me what I can and can’t do with my own writing/characters, but in this case IT’S TRUE.
Characters are NOT Barbie dolls. They can’t change skin colour, eye colour, hair, occupation, etc, without reason. You can’t make an already invented culture from another book different and keep continuailty. It’s confusing.

FIRE AND ALL OF THE PEOPLE IN THE DELLS HAD BROWN SKIN IN THE BOOK “FIRE”. SHE MAKES IT CLEAR THAT PEOPLE FROM THE DELLS HAVE BROWN SKIN AND DIFFERENT COLORED EYES. ALSO FIRE IS A FUCKING MONSTER!! MONSTERS ARE KNOWN FOR THEIR CRAZY COLORED FUR/HAIR. PLUS POC CAN HAVE GREEN, BROWN, BLUE OR ANY OTHER FUCKING COLOR OF EYES OR HAIR, IT’S JUST MORE PREDOMINANT IN WHITE PEOPLE.
Your casual racism is showing. Also I was unsure whether to buy this book, but now I will because your review is ridiculous and sexist, racist, and ableist. You are a terrible human being and you should feel terrible.
